  • Take Time, Make Time - Action Calendar

Bridges Founding Director MaryJane Beach writes: When parents and teachers ask me for advice on building positive routines with youth, I tell them about my own experience:

Four years ago, I started putting stickers in a notebook each time I went to the gym. This simple system has been the 'push' that I've needed to build a regular routine 3-4 times per week.
Using an action calendar: Once your child/student has set a personal goal (i.e. make a new friend, turn in homework, pick up dirty laundry) build confidence by keeping an "action" calendar. Using a small calendar only for this purpose, select a symbol together, encouraging the child to choose a favorite- stickers are easy. For each "action" toward the goal, put a sticker on the day in the calendar. Make a point of returning to look at the stickers every so often, perhaps monthly or when you suspect low morale. Congratulate the effort with positive words only. Discourage "self sabotage" by saying, "look at what you've done". Resist any tendency toward "put downs".

    New website launches

Bridges Associates has redesigned its website with new content, a calendar of events, an expanded product line and improved accessbility for individuals with disabilities. What would you like to see on the Bridges website? Send your suggestions to us!

    Social Enrichment: Think-Pair-Share

Think-pair-share is a low risk strategy for any age group to draw out those who are reluctant to speak up. First, pose a problem to the class. Ask each student to think about it individually for a minute. Then ask each student to turn to a neighbor and take another minute to share their solution quietly. Lastly, ask for volunteers to share with the class.
