Understanding and Managing Learning Differences: July 16-18, 2008

UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING LEARNING DIFFERENCES Through Bridges Associates, Yarmouthport, Massachusetts: John Beach, M. Ed. Educ. Psych. and Mary Jane Beach, M. Ed. Family Therapist. This 20-hour course provides an overview of learning differences including learning disabilities, inattention, impulsivity , and memory and language processing weaknesses. Their impact on learning, self-esteem and behavior at home and school will be considered. Psychological and academic testing will be reviewed to better understand and read reports and to be an active participant in the educational planning process. Strategies to help students with learning and behavior at home and school will be discussed. More formal Accommodation Plans (504) and Educational Plans (IEP’s) will be explained. Strategies for effective collaboration at Team Meetings will be practiced. Materials will be provided.

Date: July 16, 17, & 18 from 9:00 to 4:00

Location: The Sally Borden Summer Institute at Friends Academy in North Dartmouth, MA.

Continuing Education Credit:

  • Social Workers:Social Workers receive 20 CE hours of credit for this course. Commonwealth Educational Seminars, provider #1117, is approved as a Provider for Social Work Continuing Education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Commonwealth Educational Seminars maintains responsibility for the program.
  • Psychologists: Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor Continuing Education for Psychologists. Psychologists attending this program receive 20 Continuing Education Hours credit. CES maintains responsibility for these programs.

Take Charge® Coach Training Basic Course: July 21-23, 2008

TAKE CHARGE!® COACH TRAINING BASIC COURSE through Bridges Associates, Yarmouthport, Massachusetts: John Beach, M. Ed. Educ. Psych. and Mary Jane Beach, M. Ed. Family Therapist, AAMFT Approved Supervisor This 20-hour course provides an overview of the Take Charge! method, lessons, materials and tools. During this course, participants will learn to use the twelve lessons and activities that teach the unique style and strategies of the Take Charge! Coach. Participants will learn the multisensory method to help clients establish a new direction, understand learning styles for self awareness; appreciate the importance of the sensory environment; facilitate optimistic attitudes, guide healing and self-respect, enhance confidence; envision success, establish routines, achieve personal balance, communicate effectively, engage in self evaluation and reflection, and celebrate resilience. There will be time to present cases and practice using the multisensory tools. All curriculum materials are included.

Take Charge!® Family Coach Leader Training / Experiential Course (20 hours)
This twenty hour, thirteen session course provides training for leaders of the family coach training project. It offers an experiential group for individuals or teams as they prepare to offer Take Charge! At Home programs in community settings. In addition to planning and preparing weekly lessons and discussing program issues and challenges, the training will address co-leader collaboration and topical issues such as authentic family partnerships, responding to differences, and the impact of disabilities at home. Concepts outlined in the course description, New Dimensions in Clinical Practice, will be integrated into the clinical practice. Prerequisite: Take Charge!® Coach Training Basic Course or tutorial.

New Dimensions in Clinical Practice (20 hours)
This course provides an overview of research based clinical models for children, adults, families and groups affected by trauma, learning disabilities, addictions and attention disorders. The models are strength based, mindful, creative and multisensory. Systemic treatment includes care management and team building to connect all systems, both internal and external. Making referrals, giving feedback, and presenting information to clients with transparency are covered. This course is for behavioral health clinicians and potential trainers. The topics are: collaborative and strength based approaches with families; hands-on coaching for change; behavioral fluency to manage executive function disorders; new strategies to diffuse tension (power struggles) in relationships; traditional and alternative strategies to manage symptoms and stress; manage behavior, moods and emotion with metaphor and play; building structure and new routines; compassion and limits without co-dependency; sensitive response to cultural differences; and effective communication with systems.
